DIY audiophile

by Kristofer Lacarrere
(New York)

Have been building my own stuff for years and have been using active crossovers for 15 years--

In my search for perfect sound I have bought many, many crossovers anything from infinity IRS, pioneer sf-850, Mirage, Audio Research and last but certainly not least TDM's which are pro audio and fantastic. I finally decided to go all digital using Pure Vinyl Channel D which has an incorporated electronic crossover, built in computer preamp and fumbled on your website. you should try it as I think it actually makes itunes sound way better even without the digital crossover!

The holy grail in my opinion for speakers at least for everything above 200cycles is no box at all--I only use old drivers believe it or not--for some reason paper sounds better than everything else and currently my reference system is a 5way--yeah sounds lile overkill but take a look at what I am using--sub35Hz - 1 sunfire with a stone sculpture on top of it that weighs about 100punds; use only built in crossover--makes a big difference otherwise it moves too much, from 35Hz to 200 Hz I have vented cabinets using Hi Vi F8's in 1.5 cubic feet each, 3" ports 5 inches deep (they sound really good! with a naturall rolloff around 35 cycles) from 200Hz to 1000Hz I use neodymium 10" JBL 125a's and an audio research EC-2 tubed crossover at 6db/12db for the 20Hz crossover--they sound fantastic and yes they are bigger than the drivers in the bass cabinet and operating on a narrow baffle 12" wide and 34" tall! You need a large driver to get real midbass (these are on a 15 degree 1.5" inch double reiforced baltic birch baffle, from 1000Hz to 8000Hz I then crossover using a very old but very good sounding pioneer sf-850 at 18db/18db-this is electable between 6/12 and 18db! (one of the low channels does not work and I still have not found anything that sounds better than my modded audio research! The pioneer input is hooked into the audio research's output for the highs)

As for upper midrange drivers I use old realistic 1.5" midrange dome back to back hooked in parallel but out of phase for 4ohm impedance with a 3ohm resistor to the back one in order to lower it's output and a .3mh inductor in series for a first order gentle slope around 8khz---this is an amazing sounding driver for the money and images better than anything else--the front upper midrange is also time aligned with the JBL lower midbass.

Last but not least and keeping with vintage drivers, I use old infinity Emit driver's with very high quality caps hooked in parallel (about 5 of them for about a 2Ufd value) for them to pick up the air (again these are time aligned and both the mdi and tweeter are glued using silicone on an oak 2 by 1 piece attached to the angled baffle-as such they have no baffle!)--this combo sounds fantastic with incredible authority and refinement--using my own custom built eight channel amplifier with very simple 50w/channel amps--I have noticed that passive still sound's better than active at high frequencies and for ribbons (all my designs basically now incorporate ribbons but they come in at higher fequencies--I have also had success with piezzo horn tweeters; they sound great if you cross them over high!)

The high frequency also means that the tweeter does not need to operate in a bipolar/dipolar mode (I use to incorporate switch so you could chose between the two)-It actually seems to sound better this way?

Extremely important -I use a separate cable for each driver that is soldered onto the driver terminals---this makes a huge difference and all my speakers are now directly soldered unto the cables--I also use very small gauge cables (24gauge solid copper/ double wound on each conductor for effective 21 gauge) -sounds great for the top three frequencies/(four drivers) and have special cables for bass drivers, don't remember the name but they sound good for every thing with very high purity copper stranded around a center core

I will send you pictures separately--

I am trying to get my ESI 8 channel d/a to work as we speak will definitely upgrade to an echo 12 by 12 very shortly but will let you know my impressions as soon as I can--Thanks--K

These Must be Awesome Speakers
by: Peter Selby

Kristofer,

Quite the awesome story. I love reading about projects like this.

It looks like you have poured a ton of time and resources into your speakers and system.

I've read quite a lot about the Channel D software. I actually tried to talk the designers into implementing the software for Windows in addition to MAC. I always recommend Channel D for all my MAC users/readers. Very good stuff. And I do love that it includes the xovers in the program, I wish J river did this as well. Its such a useful feature and pays off huge for transparency and musicality as you well know.

Thanks for the write up and let me know when you have the pics ready. I'll post them to your page when I have them.

Peter

Customer Testimonials:

"Peter, I just wanted to drop you a quick note and say how impressed I am with these speakers. They are EXACTLY what I was looking for..very very small with big sound.

My wife loves them as well. They look great, and you hardly notice them at all sitting on the shelf. They integrate perfectly as surrounds. I have them crossed over at 150 as you recommended...simply fantastic. I only have about 15 hours on them so far, so I know they will only get better. You really have something here. Kelly ~ Montana USA

"I found these speakers by accident and after reading all the available info and after several emails back and forth with the company owner I decided I had nothing to lose, so I ordered a set of 5 mini cube speakers.

Peter was very helpful and patient and always responded to my emails within hours.

I have had the speakers set up for a couple of days and they sound great; they are everything described on the web site.

The sound from these small speakers truly is awesome.

I replaced a set of very high quality but also very large speakers and have not been disappointed... and the wife loves not having four large speakers in the living room.

The sound from these speakers really does fill the entire house, I was concerned about the small size of the speakers due to the fact I like to listen to music and movies at volumes most would consider loud.

These speakers are more than capable of playing at volume levels louder than I ever need while also maintaining very high quality sound. ~by; William (Corinth,TX)

"I ordered these speakers in the hope of bringing some life to my entertainment system... I didn’t think it would bring room filling sound to my entire house. These speakers not only fill my den with crystal clear sound, but radiate great sound throughout the house. Thanks for such a great product!" Celia ~Malasia IP#110.159.58.99

"these speakers breathed new life back into my music, I had no idea such small surround sound speakers could perform so well." John from US IP# 24.177.193.45

"how you got so much performance out of these speakers I have no idea -Great product!" Andrew from Denmark IP# 130.225.22.254

"nice speakers, nice finish, blended in with my room well and the wife is happy too. Great sound presentation! Now I just wish you guys made a subwoofer." Kyle from US IP# 98.233.53.244

"These surround sound speakers are amazing! After running them in for a couple days, I decided to play some tunes, and they never once sounded distorted or strained...

While I know they should be paired with a good sub-woofer bass system, I think they sound good enough that I can wait until I have the money to buy a really nice sub." Fred US IP#76.208.13.182

"Wow, what a great set of speakers. I really understand what you mean by a large sound-stage." Sandy from US IP# 137.100.121.30

"Recently I came to realize that my HDTV was better than my sound system... So, I decided to piece together a better sound system. Running across your site (and these speakers) was the best thing that has happened to my home theater.

My current system is; an older receiver, a home theater PC with a blue-ray player drive, and one pair of your Mini-Cubes. (for now; I plan to buy 3 more speakers soon)" Kevin US IP#98.179.199.26

"Purchasing a new set of surround sound speakers was a must for me. My old system looked awful and sounded even worse. The quality and look of your Mini-Cube speaker were a perfect fit.

Once I reviewed the ratings and tests I knew they would be perfect. I will be sure to look for more information and products from you. I can't believe the performance of these surround sound speakers for the modest price. I would recommend these speakers to anyone!" Mike US IP#172.16.2.142

"The overall quality and dynamic capacity of these speakers really took me by surprise. Their imaging is distinct, tonality is crystal clear, and oh yeah... they pump out some serious volume!

I feel like I have stolen speakers that I can't afford. People that spend more are Suckers!!" Micah US #Ohio
