Modeling a design is much more accurate and precise than typical drafting.

High end speaker manufacturers use CAD. (computer aided design)

The benefit to designing these plans in CAD is that mistakes are very easily seen and must be corrected in order for rendering to be accurate.

The program will not redraw correctly if the measurements are off.

I’m not there yet, but someday…

I plan to have dozens of speaker box plans and DIY speaker box projects on this site eventually.

I could have just slapped a bunch of plans here like some other sites have done, but what would be the point of that?

It takes some time to test, build, retest, correct, fix and finalize a speaker design plan.

The good news for you is that you can be confident you are getting something of real value instead of mass produced junk.

I will continue to add more and more plans over the years but even then I think the process will be slow.

There are many consumers who want a wide variety of cookie cutter speaker projects. I guess they may be disappointed with my business model.

I like to build non-resonant enclosures and DIY speaker box projects. I personally know that the speaker cabinet design can have an effect on the music and media that is playing.

Non resonant speaker boxes are the best way to get the most out of any given speaker design. And this does not imply just throwing a few braces into the box.

The bracing needs to be well thought out to minimize standing waves and internal cabinet pressures.

In short, the cabinet should be as inert as the budget allows. I don’t think it takes much more time to build a speaker box correctly than building one sloppy and wrong.

On my plans I don’t dictate the type of speaker cabinet hardware or speaker binding posts, speaker driver screws and such. Depending on the budget you are trying to adhere to will determine your options here as well. I think in most situations a midline binding posts solution is probably best.

I have seen some speaker builders use carpet padding or speaker box carpet inside their enclosures. This is fine if you are not after the last word in resolution and transient response. I am, so I use either Owens Corning fiberglass or real wool stuffing.

Wool is expensive but it really does damp better than anything else on the market. Kevlar blanket might work well too – although I haven’t tested it. Let me know if you do and what you think of it.

Some New DIY Speaker Projects I have been working on:


• A stand mounted monitor “Instrument Quad Mini”

      –this speaker can hardly be considered small but it is “smaller” than some of my other designs. This speaker could be built without the stand and added to a stand you already have.

The stand is built to complement the design of the main speaker cabinet. Both are built very robust to lower resonance and provide a solid platform for the speaker drivers to launch.

The speaker box includes a cavity for a built in amplifier. Speaker Building – Build your perfect speaker with our parts and supplies from crossover components to full kits.

This speaker building project would be considered moderately difficult, but someone with basic woodworking skills could easily manage.

I designed the cuts and panels to be as simple as possible to cut and assemble. The cutting, gluing and assembly should take between 15 and 25 hours depending on your tools and skill level.

They could be finished in wood veneer or painted the color of your choice. You could even sub out the painting to a local auto body shop if you don’t wish to shoot them yourself. These speaker plans are available now.

If using this speaker with your own active crossover and separate amplifiers use a 24 db LR4 crossover slope somewhere around 2500-3500 Hz.

Experiment with a few different slopes and choose the one you like best. I think a slope right around 3000 is the best for these drivers. You have a variety of crossover options available. Read this speaker crossover article for more information about crossovers..

• A simple dipolar speaker “Instrument 5 Dipole” –this speaker is fairly large at 48 inches high and almost 24 inches wide. But those who have heard dipole speakers know that in order to achieve any deep bass the large panel is a necessity. Get these free dipole speaker plans

This is a great ribbon and dynamic driver speaker system that sounds stunning if you like the sound of ribbons and dipoles. This is a full dipolar design with tweeter, mid-range, and woofer drivers all operating in dipole mode.

This DIY speaker projects build is fairly easy if you have a table saw, router, and other basic woodworking tools.

If you use some good speaker cabinet hardware and excellent speaker drivers these will be some great dipole speakers.

What speaker drivers to use with these simple dipole speakers:

Be sure to remove the backcup on this tweeter prior to installation for dipole configuration.

Plenty of bass here. For dipole speakers you need lots of air movement. These will deliver it.

Crossovers for DIY speaker projects

I would use andipole-baffle-main-mounted-on-column-support analog crossover or digital crossover such as one of the following. Active Crossovers – Build your perfect speaker with our parts and supplies from crossover components to full kits.

Use 24 db LR4 crossover slopes at 100Hz and 2500Hz. You will need 6 amplifier channels for this setup. Use combination’s of 2 channel stereo amplifiers, or mono-block amps.
