Home Theater Design Group Delay and Distortion - Concept, Theory, and Data: "Fix Your Home Theater Room Design!"

home theater for dummies book Home theater design group distortion and group delay?

Looks like a boring subject doesn't it?

I'll try to keep it as quick and clean as possible.

Bear with me... this is important stuff to know.

What is Group delay and group distortion?

Without getting into a really detailed paper on functions, calculations and such, it works like this:

One section of the audio signal (frequency) can be delayed from the rest of the signal.

Meaning...

Part of the frequency spectrum is stretched into a different time position from what was originally recorded.

This where the term 'delay' comes from in the term 'group delay'.

Group delay can happen in your source components, amplifiers, loudspeakers, and even the home theater room itself.

Can you fix it?

Not really...

But you can control the damage.

Specifically, the shape of the home theater room layout is very important

    A. How will the room be laid out?

    B. What are the features of the home theater room that you would like to showcase?

    C. What is the traffic flow in the room?

    D. What design elements and decor' would you like to have in the home theater room?

What about room shape and room dimensions: Developing the Home Theater Plan If you are interested in high quality audio, the length and width of the home theater room should not be the same.

Best if the ceiling height is not one half, one third, or one fourth the length or width room measurements.

What happens in the room is that bass modes build up as supported by the dimensions and the room boundaries.

If two or more room dimensions are the same, the frequencies that are excited by the room modes will be either twice or three times as loud depending on how many measurements are multiplied.

It is often necessary to build a mechanical device to help with certain problematic frequencies.

All rooms have room modes and some modes would benefit greatly by using a Helmholtz resonator - read more at Home Theater Plan. These are used to control that specific bass mode peak. These are narrow band devices that can bring down the peaks of a specific frequency.

Room Treatments? Home theater design group (delay fixes) recommendations

The upper bass, mid-range and treble frequencies can be handled with simple devices known as room treatments or acoustic panels.

These usually look like panels or cylinders sometimes placed in the corners and walls of the room.

These can even be built into the home theater room design to give a more appealing look. To read more about Home Theater acoustics click here.

Make some home theater room measurements:

We recommend that you take measurements of your room at the main listening position.

These measurements will give much insight into why your room sounds as it does. This will also give you an idea of the problem areas of your room from an acoustic perspective.

Measurements can help you develop a plan to achieve smoother in room response and improved sound quality.

Speaker Positioning: Home Theater Design Group Recommendations

Speaker positions have a direct contribution to the overall performance of your listening room.

Your best speaker positions are probably not in the corners of the room.

In wall speakers and on wall speakers look nice and stay out of the way. However, the audio performance of these types of speaker systems are not as good as floor standing speakers.

Home theater equipment quality; Getting the best home theater set up

Equipment manufacturers are splitting hairs with technology...

The weakest link in any audio chain is the loudspeaker system.

This is a fact based on average distortion ratings of equipment and loudspeaker measurements!

The loudspeaker system introduces far more distortion and errors into the signal than any CD player, preamplifier, or amplifier of a quality design.

If a home theater amplifier manufacturer had distortion levels and phase errors equal to that of a loudspeaker system they would be considered the worst measuring devices in the industry.

Where do Home Theater Loud Speakers Fail?

1. Group delay and transient response

2. Multitone distortion

3. Doppler distortion

4. Spatial distortion

5. Phase errors

6. Driver Damping

7. Driver response Distortion

8. Crossover distortion

9. Driver ringing

10. Group delay distortion

Customer Testimonials:

"Peter, I just wanted to drop you a quick note and say how impressed I am with these speakers. They are EXACTLY what I was looking for..very very small with big sound.

My wife loves them as well. They look great, and you hardly notice them at all sitting on the shelf. They integrate perfectly as surrounds. I have them crossed over at 150 as you recommended...simply fantastic. I only have about 15 hours on them so far, so I know they will only get better. You really have something here. Kelly ~ Montana USA

"I found these speakers by accident and after reading all the available info and after several emails back and forth with the company owner I decided I had nothing to lose, so I ordered a set of 5 mini cube speakers.

Peter was very helpful and patient and always responded to my emails within hours.

I have had the speakers set up for a couple of days and they sound great; they are everything described on the web site.

The sound from these small speakers truly is awesome.

I replaced a set of very high quality but also very large speakers and have not been disappointed... and the wife loves not having four large speakers in the living room.

The sound from these speakers really does fill the entire house, I was concerned about the small size of the speakers due to the fact I like to listen to music and movies at volumes most would consider loud.

These speakers are more than capable of playing at volume levels louder than I ever need while also maintaining very high quality sound. ~by; William (Corinth,TX)

"I ordered these speakers in the hope of bringing some life to my entertainment system... I didn’t think it would bring room filling sound to my entire house. These speakers not only fill my den with crystal clear sound, but radiate great sound throughout the house. Thanks for such a great product!" Celia ~Malasia IP#110.159.58.99

"these speakers breathed new life back into my music, I had no idea such small surround sound speakers could perform so well." John from US IP# 24.177.193.45

"how you got so much performance out of these speakers I have no idea -Great product!" Andrew from Denmark IP# 130.225.22.254

"nice speakers, nice finish, blended in with my room well and the wife is happy too. Great sound presentation! Now I just wish you guys made a subwoofer." Kyle from US IP# 98.233.53.244

"These surround sound speakers are amazing! After running them in for a couple days, I decided to play some tunes, and they never once sounded distorted or strained...

While I know they should be paired with a good sub-woofer bass system, I think they sound good enough that I can wait until I have the money to buy a really nice sub." Fred US IP#76.208.13.182

"Wow, what a great set of speakers. I really understand what you mean by a large sound-stage." Sandy from US IP# 137.100.121.30

"Recently I came to realize that my HDTV was better than my sound system... So, I decided to piece together a better sound system. Running across your site (and these speakers) was the best thing that has happened to my home theater.

My current system is; an older receiver, a home theater PC with a blue-ray player drive, and one pair of your Mini-Cubes. (for now; I plan to buy 3 more speakers soon)" Kevin US IP#98.179.199.26

"Purchasing a new set of surround sound speakers was a must for me. My old system looked awful and sounded even worse. The quality and look of your Mini-Cube speaker were a perfect fit.

Once I reviewed the ratings and tests I knew they would be perfect. I will be sure to look for more information and products from you. I can't believe the performance of these surround sound speakers for the modest price. I would recommend these speakers to anyone!" Mike US IP#172.16.2.142

"The overall quality and dynamic capacity of these speakers really took me by surprise. Their imaging is distinct, tonality is crystal clear, and oh yeah... they pump out some serious volume!

I feel like I have stolen speakers that I can't afford. People that spend more are Suckers!!" Micah US #Ohio
