The Instrument 3 Dipolar Loudspeaker is one of Our Own Speaker Design Plans:

These speakers are extremely dynamic, coherent, and transparent. One of the best speakers I have ever heard. I think thDIY loudspeaker pictureey are competitive with Magnepan 20.1 loudspeakers, a bit more dynamic but maybe slightly less transparent.

With good source equipment such as using digital music files and digital crossover slopes these are world class speakers.

Dipolar speakers are not for everyone. They will not have as much impact as a well designed sealed speakers system.

But, what they do well is eliminate as much as possible the speaker and room interaction.

Dipole speakers create a null to the sides of the speaker and this causes speakers interaction with the side walls to be much lower in amplitude than a monopole.

Mono pole speakers radiate sound much more evenly in all directions than dipoles.

I make no arguments about which speaker design that I think is superior. I think all designs have their merits and I like them both for different reasons.

What you will prefer may depend heavily on the type of media that you use and listen to the most.

Also, the acoustics of your room will be determining factors in what type of speaker you may prefer.

My advise is to try both dipole and monopole speakers and see which you like the best.

Plans are available on the Factory Direct Speakers and Plans Page for Dipole, Monopole, and Omnipolar speakers.

Home Theater Pictures can help you make important decisions about your home theater decor’ and theme.

We have a few photos here of speaker projects and home theater projects that we have worked on.

Some of these speakers were built in our facility. Others may be customer projects.

The HTPC case to the left is one of the ways that you can customize your home theater experience. This site shows you many ways that you can effectively and economically improve your home theater experience.

By upgrading some of the home theater equipment yourself you can save substantially on costs.

The home theater PC or HTPC is a great way to add functionality and convenience to your home theater audio system.

They can also give a high tech appearance to your home theater photos.

The Instrument 2 digital loudspeaker System:

DIY speaker picture

This is our Instrument 2 loudspeaker system. Available as speaker plans on our Factory Direct Speakers and plans page.

These are a three way dynamic driver DIY speaker cabinet design.

These speaker design plans use a totally sealed cabinet and digital crossover system. You can use any active crossover system that you like such as the Behringer DCX2496 Pro.

You could also use an analog active crossover such that are common to the pro audio industry. These are easy to use and are fairly cost effective crossovers starting at only a few hundred dollars.

Of course you will need more amplifiers but you can generally use a lesser quality amp because the demands placed on the amp from one driver is more forgiving.Meridian Digital Loudspeakers DSP 8000

And, there are no passive crossover components in the signal path.

For best results use in conjunction with a HTPC and active software crossovers such as described on our digital crossover page – click here. There are over 150 articles on this site all written to help you get the best audio and video for the least amount of money.

Digital Signal Processing Loudspeakers:

The Meridian DSP 8000 loudspeaker picture to the right is a great example of a digital loud speaker that was designed correctly.

I think Meridian is ahead of its time with their position in the high end market.

However, the cost of entry for these loudspeakers is very high to the tune of around $50,000 USD.

This web site is dedicated to making the DSP (digital signal processing) a reality for more of us by bring the costs down to real world levels.

Take a look at some of the articles in the NAV bar for more information about DSP and how you can use it.

A Simple DIY speaker project: Home Theater Photos

finished mini cube speakers

This is a mini cube speaker that was built on request from one of our customers.

The total cost for a pair of these is around $40.00. The performance vs the price is very good.

This speaker is competitive with the Bose Acoustimass speaker system.

I built this speaker in about 4 hours and was very surprised by how well they performed. These would make a great computer speakers project or small home theater in a box replacement.

The audio quality will pretty easily outperform most small cube speakers while also being very cheap.

For more information go to Mini Cube Speakers.

Home theater idea pictures, home theater photos and references can be found throughout this site.

Primarily though, this is a self help site for the Home Theater enthusiast and anyone interested in getting high quality audio and video for their home.

Conventional Passive Crossover Loudspeakers: Home Theater Photos

To the right is the Thiel CS 2.3 stereo loud speaker system. These were some very good speakers in their day.

Thiel now has one of the highest regarded speaker systems in the world with the CS3.7 loudspeaker (see left picture).

These passive speakers are great by any standard and offer incredible performance.

The price for the Thiel CS 3.7 is around $13,000 USD. Not exactly cheap, but they are competitive with many designs in the $20,000 plus range.

Overall, a great passive speaker at somewhat sane price.

Omni Polar DIY loudspeaker System: Other Home Theater Photos

omni polar DIY picture

For a very simple and coherent speaker look no further than a a single speaker driver system.

The single speaker driver may not be able to do many things that a multi way floor standing speaker can do.

But a single driver is still very musical and enjoyable.

Probably the best performance attribute of single speaker driver and full range speakers are their coherence.

They will not have super deep bass and may not have the most even and smoothest treble but are very easy to listen to.

I have always liked single driver systems for their simple music making abilities.

If you plan to use a full range driver for home theater make sure to use home theater subwoofer or home theater subwoofers also.

These will not produce extremely deep bass. Most of them will only play happily down to about 100 Hz.
