The Excellence of the Sony LED TV Bravia XBR-55HX929

Honestly, this is the best HDTV I have seen so far. This Sony LED TV impressed me in so many ways it was really hard not to buy my own set.

There are a few minor problems here, but the old days of Samsung ruling the HDTV roost are over. This Sony LCD HDTV set is the new king of sub 5000.00 HDTV’s in my humble (yet correct) opinion.

Update 4/02/2012: I've seen this set now several times since I reviewed it here and I have to say that I really want it. Since this review I've noticed that many sets and brands have taken a step backward instead of forward. This is pretty normal. Brands tend to fluctuate up and down in quality as they work on improving their products. This set is looking even better than before. I want one. This Bravia is competitive with sets that are twice as expensive.

The black levels are pretty much up to par with the best Sony plasma HDTV set, which is really saying something. An LCD LED TV that can compete head on regarding black levels against any plasma. And it can beat them with light output and colors. Sounds good to me.

Beyond that though, the black levels are on par with the best Plasmas ever. This is basically beyond reproach as an LCD set. Its scores almost as good as the best of plasma and does so with the increased light output of LCD. Nothing really lost here.

LCD’s can’t usually duplicate the black levels that a good Plasma finds easy. This set can, and it does. In short you get all the benefits of LCD, such as light output, vibrant color, and low energy use… and you get superb black level performance too. The only real negative here that I see is that it is more expensive than comparably equipped Plasma.

The Sony Bravia reviewed here uses the well regarded local dimming backlit LED’s to make the darks darker. It basically works by switching off and or dimming the LED’s that are behind the screen where a shadow or complete darkness is needed.

The technology has been around a while but just now in 2011 are companies really getting a grip on how to do this right.

This Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929 55-Inch 1080p 3D Local-Dimming LED HDTV is the first set I have seen to really get this right. Sure the Sony gets pretty much everything else right too with exception of some blooming artifacts. But, honestly with this level of performance on tap at the price (even though this set is not cheap) you really can’t ask for more.

This is the highest performance HDTV set I’ve seen in my opinion. I think the technology is really getting to the point where if you have been putting off getting a new set, this one should be enough to throw you over the edge. This is a fantastic television by any standard.

What this Sony LED TV does right:

Black levels are awesome.

Black level details were good too with good variation of dark greys going from absolute black to less dark colors and...

Greyscale were also excellent on this Sony LCD LED television.

The color is very, very good.

Clarity is very good. And detail also, quite awesome.

What it does wrong:

Still fairly expensive, although the price has come down quite a bit now.

Off axis viewing isn't very good, especially compared to other Sony LCD televisions. (when you are not seated directly in front of the set) I don't personally think this is a major issue.

Some blooming problems and artifacts (fairly minor)

Overall what we thought of the Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929 55-Inch 1080p 3D Local-Dimming LED HDTV:

This is a fantastic Sony LCD TV set by any comparison and against any other brand. While not perfect, it is very, very close... like I said, I want one bad.

The price is pretty high, but this is a high end set.

If you can’t afford it get a set that is cheaper. Just know that the performance is probably not going to be up to the performance that is available with the big Sony. It really is that good.

Customer Testimonials:

"Peter, I just wanted to drop you a quick note and say how impressed I am with these speakers. They are EXACTLY what I was looking for..very very small with big sound.

My wife loves them as well. They look great, and you hardly notice them at all sitting on the shelf. They integrate perfectly as surrounds. I have them crossed over at 150 as you recommended...simply fantastic. I only have about 15 hours on them so far, so I know they will only get better. You really have something here. Kelly ~ Montana USA

"I found these speakers by accident and after reading all the available info and after several emails back and forth with the company owner I decided I had nothing to lose, so I ordered a set of 5 mini cube speakers.

Peter was very helpful and patient and always responded to my emails within hours.

I have had the speakers set up for a couple of days and they sound great; they are everything described on the web site.

The sound from these small speakers truly is awesome.

I replaced a set of very high quality but also very large speakers and have not been disappointed... and the wife loves not having four large speakers in the living room.

The sound from these speakers really does fill the entire house, I was concerned about the small size of the speakers due to the fact I like to listen to music and movies at volumes most would consider loud.

These speakers are more than capable of playing at volume levels louder than I ever need while also maintaining very high quality sound. ~by; William (Corinth,TX)

"I ordered these speakers in the hope of bringing some life to my entertainment system... I didn’t think it would bring room filling sound to my entire house. These speakers not only fill my den with crystal clear sound, but radiate great sound throughout the house. Thanks for such a great product!" Celia ~Malasia IP#110.159.58.99

"these speakers breathed new life back into my music, I had no idea such small surround sound speakers could perform so well." John from US IP# 24.177.193.45

"how you got so much performance out of these speakers I have no idea -Great product!" Andrew from Denmark IP# 130.225.22.254

"nice speakers, nice finish, blended in with my room well and the wife is happy too. Great sound presentation! Now I just wish you guys made a subwoofer." Kyle from US IP# 98.233.53.244

"These surround sound speakers are amazing! After running them in for a couple days, I decided to play some tunes, and they never once sounded distorted or strained...

While I know they should be paired with a good sub-woofer bass system, I think they sound good enough that I can wait until I have the money to buy a really nice sub." Fred US IP#76.208.13.182

"Wow, what a great set of speakers. I really understand what you mean by a large sound-stage." Sandy from US IP# 137.100.121.30

"Recently I came to realize that my HDTV was better than my sound system... So, I decided to piece together a better sound system. Running across your site (and these speakers) was the best thing that has happened to my home theater.

My current system is; an older receiver, a home theater PC with a blue-ray player drive, and one pair of your Mini-Cubes. (for now; I plan to buy 3 more speakers soon)" Kevin US IP#98.179.199.26

"Purchasing a new set of surround sound speakers was a must for me. My old system looked awful and sounded even worse. The quality and look of your Mini-Cube speaker were a perfect fit.

Once I reviewed the ratings and tests I knew they would be perfect. I will be sure to look for more information and products from you. I can't believe the performance of these surround sound speakers for the modest price. I would recommend these speakers to anyone!" Mike US IP#172.16.2.142

"The overall quality and dynamic capacity of these speakers really took me by surprise. Their imaging is distinct, tonality is crystal clear, and oh yeah... they pump out some serious volume!

I feel like I have stolen speakers that I can't afford. People that spend more are Suckers!!" Micah US #Ohio
