Looking for Subwoofer Reviews? This isn’t one of them, subwoofer shopping stops here!

EbenLee Audio ELA Subwoofers

Real customers like You write the best subwoofer reviews… Not some publishing company that uses difficult to understand language and obscure, seldom used, words and phrases.

ELA-3 subwoofer reviews

Real people like yourself, writing a real experience that you have had with a specific product. What does this have to do with subwoofer basics and subwoofer reviews?

Everything!

The ELA line of subwoofer are high sound quality subs. They will produce quite a bit of high impact slam, but are not high SPL subwoofers in the lowest octaves.

They are intended for music and home theater in moderately sized rooms. They're design goal was to produce highly accurate musical sound with high levels of pitch definition and musical nuance. And they do this from a very small package.

If you are looking for a large bombastic home theater sub with maximum output, we are working on much larger sealed and ported subs to satisfy the high end home theater crowd. Look for these over the coming months.

How to build great subwoofer enclosures

What does it take to build a good subwoofer?

Using T/S parameters to their full effect is obviously necessary. But it goes a bit further than that; measurements for the MC2 speakers and ELA-3 subwoofer!

There are reasons to use a ported subwoofer just as there are equally good reasons to use a sealed sub. Which subwoofer design works best for you will have more to do with your other speakers and the room they are placed in.

First; the main loudspeakers are often the most difficult to mate with the subwoofer speakers.

Sealed subwoofers typically have better transient response. Even though they may not have quite as deep extension in the lower bass the roll off is slower, so it still sounds like they are going deep. Combined with better transient performance, a sealed sub is often the best way to go.

Ported speakers tend to ring more than sealed speakers. Inside a sealed sub, the sealed air acts similar to a shock absorber on a car to slow down the cone after the voice coil creates a transient.

Ported subs don’t do this because they have a hole in the cabinet which easily vents the air above resonant frequency. However, both types of cabinets use resonance to shelve up the bass. But ported subs are the best if all you care about is maximum sound pressure level and high volume home theater with plenty of bass.

Sealed subwoofers tend to start and stop very quickly and will have a more accurate presentation (all other things being equal).

Using a ported sub with a sealed main speaker often translates into the ‘muddy bass’ syndrome.

These are generalizations and not absolute... In some situations you can break every rule and still get excellent results.

The Exceptional ELA-3 Sub

sub woofer reviews

This subwoofer was a joint effort between Jim Wilson (a customer of ours) and Peter Selby. We designed this for the person looking for a high end solution without the high end price tag.

Take a look at the bracing in this box. Ever seen anything built this dense on a subwoofer under $2000.00?

Probably not. And this subwoofer costs less than $1600.00. The box alone weighs more than most subwoofers in its price range. Rap your knuckles on the enclosure and you can feel the quality of the design. Nothing but the 'clink sound of a box' that is nearly rock hard.

Interlocking braces, expensive Baltic Birch Ply, and a low Q design for maximum pitch definition.

The ELA-3 subwoofer and the ELA-5 sub like it are musical masterpieces.

Put this subwoofer to the test and find out for yourself.

Features of the ELA-3 home subwoofer:

• Acoustic suspension (sealed) design

• 2.5" four layer voice coil

• Triple shorting ring motor (found only on more expensive subwoofers)

A Great Resource

Another article that supports our theory, this is an outside source published by Audioholics; an article about speaker panel resonance.
• Highly vented driver motor (helps cool the motor during times of high output)

• Amplifier features a heavy duty Toroidal power transformer - the amp alone weighs 18 lbs!

• Soft clip circuitry to keep distortion to a minimum when pushing the amp to its limits

• Fully adjustable parametric EQ to boost or cut problem frequencies in your room

• Thermal circuit prevents amp damage due to heat overload (you can drive it hard without fear of cooking it)

• The amplifier is contained in its own separate chamber, completely sealed off from the back-wave of the driver

• Extensively braced cabinet (see drawings)

• Attractive satin black or gloss black finish

• See some Measurements for the MC2 speakers and ELA-3 subwoofer!

Specifications of the ELA Subwoofers:

• Built in 540 watt class A/B amplifier

• 10" black anodized aluminum cone driver for high power handling (cone acts as a heat sink for the voice coil)

• 20Hz-200Hz +/-3dB at 92dB SPL (measured in room)

• 55 lbs (61.5 lbs shipping weight)

• 15"x13"x15.25" (HWD)

The ELA-3 Subwoofer has a built in amplifier for added space savings. Includes a 10 inch high excursion cast basket high output woofer. Excellent performance at this affordable price. Compare to other 10 inch subwoofers costing over $2000.00...

This is a small sealed subwoofer designed for maximum pitch definition on music and movies.
